Contest, Accepted/Rejected, Being an Admin

Seriousness

First I'd like to point out the links on the lefthand side of the journal, specifically the "submit" one. It has all of our rules and guidelines about submissions and you may want to reread them when submitting to ensure you're submitting your best possible photo!

There was a time in this club (before ~sky3blu3 and I took over) that deviants whose submissions were rejected weren't notified. The original Admin asked members if they would like be notified and I guess the general consesus was yes. Either way me and Skye have been sending out notifications to let you guys know either way. But here's where the problem lies: people whose submissions get rejected get upset at us, have a bit of a fit, and leave. I do love being Admin of a club and I so badly want to see this one succeed and become a place to find great work and great photographers, but in order to do that we cannot accept every single thing sent to us. I feel like crap every time I reject a submission but I feel like I'm doing a disservice to those whose work really is stunning if it is put up alongside photos that could be executed much better. A lot of people joined this group having found it through a thread I started in thumbshares. Pretty much anyone who posted was encouraged to join the club unless I know that absolutely none of their works would be accepted, in which case I just thanked them for sharing their stuff with us and encouraged them to check out our gallery. The problem lies with people who may have posted oodles of thumbs and when I saw one that would be accepted, they figured it meant all of their work was good enough. And when they get rejected... they get mad and leave. I try hard to be as tactful as I possibly can, pointing out where the photographer could improve and suggesting some works from their gallery that would be accepted so that they know better what we're looking for, but this doesn't always work for everyone.

Perhaps I am just too critical of the work that is submitted, but there are even photos I've taken which I would not upload to the club because I don't feel they're anything too special. In other words they aren't stunning, they aren't of interested to any other members, and so they certainly do not meet our guidelines.

So we must ask ourselves: would we rather have a club where anyone who submits anything gets accepted, we end up with a gallery flooded with submissions that are just crud, but at least everyone gets to feel all warm and fuzzy and like a great photographer... or are we selective about what we upload, and hold our members to higher standards to improve their craft and get better. Imagine submitting twice and getting rejected, reading up on some photography techniques and then taking more photos, and then the next time being accepted. Would that not be a good feeling, to know you've visably improved?

I want this club to be taken seriously by it's members and the rest of the dA community. And in order to do that I have to take it seriously myself.

 you all,
=selizabeth

what about 2 galleries? one with all the "Stunning" photographers and one with "Working on improving" photographers? I would go in the second one, and hopefully people in the first would stop by the second gallery and give critiques.

Well, I agree that people have to understand not everything can be accepted and there are certain limits for both good pieces of work and bad ones. In a more detailed manner, it makes a part of life into dealing personally with matter's like this instead of walking away. I personally don't believe that everything I do is a big piece of art (same theory like yours ~sky3blu3 ). Although that wouldn't lead to the concept that people watching your work shouldn't in my point of view not critic in a understanding way not just point out good or bad points in a separate way that it looks good or bad.
Getting more back on topic, to get a blog to explain is a good idea. People have to understand the basic concepts and rules and higher their standards on their own work. I don't think that there is much else you can do except hope that people read this or understand when they join that there is always space for achievement and "let-downs".

It's hard to reject people's pieces, but we have to do it. Like :iconselizabeth: said We can't accept everything everyone sends to us, but that doesn't mean your a horrible artist or anything like that. Just because you are being rejected does not mean you should get mad and leave. I am not saying you should like being rejected, but people need to be mature when the pieces they submit aren't approved, we have a lot of people submitting and we can not spend hours explaining to you why we did not accept your submission, at least we are polite enough to tell you. We might have to go back to the old way that if they weren't accepted we just won't tell you, because everyone getting angry that we did not accept the pieces they send in is VERY STRESSFUL to deal with.

Actually I (=selizabeth) wrote the above bit, the last part with about the competition was written by ~sky3blu3 :)

I think it may help to elaborate more in the "submissions" page about how we strive for the best. I'm also going to begin asking people if they mind their work being uploaded to the scraps section of this accounts gallery (if it's deemed not high quality enough for the main gallery), and then just encourage everyone else to go there and critique it to help them improve.

I think from now on when someone sends in a piece, if it's not accepted I'm going to ask them if they mind us uploading it to the scraps section to be critiqued by other members so they can improve.

And of course anyone who submits is more than welcome to discuss with me or Skye why their piece wasn't accepted or even why it was ^^ It might takes us a little bit to respond to each inquiry but we do answer all messages eventually!

We're definitely on the same wavelength. It really upset me when I saw that particular incident that happened, but I didn't want to pursue it with the deviant since they seemed to have made up their mind that they were leaving.

I think using the scraps section is a good idea, especially if people submit several versions of the same picture. They do this in the PopPhoto magazine where they show the "rejects" and mention how it could be fizxed. Scraps can also serve as a good tutorial section.

I think that is a great idea,
maybe it will make people happier haha.

I wanted to suggest the same idea like selizabeth did. I truly agree that there has to be an election for all the works. But I think that the works should be critiqued why they are bad. This could help to improve skills and knowledge.
I suggest a one way.
To upload all the works, and let the members of this club to decide weather the photo is good or bad. Voting system from -5 to 5 could be a solution. When the pic after a week has less than 0 points, it should be deleted. But a problem that there is no program to count points(as fas as I know O.o ), so i would really annoy to count the points...
or this kind of system could be adapted to the 'favorite' one.. but I'm a little lazy to think today ^^
