What is this journal?

This journal is to be a collection of useful photography related tutorials and resources from around the web. The goal is to create a place where our members (or anyone on dA) can come to get answers to questions. If you have or know of any good tutorials or resources, please leave a comment here or send us a note with a link :)

Got a question? Don't see an answer here? First be sure to try Googling for it, there is a ton of great information on the web. Second, try checking out the photography forums right here on dA. You find them here.

Lighting

Studio lighting tutorial by =Behindmyblueeyes is a simple but in depth tutorial on how to set up lights for a small product shot.

Special Techniques and Tricks

HDR

Simple HDR Tutorial by ~gameplayer529 is a great guide for beginners who have never done HDR before.
HDR and RAW by =AlexParlett is a fabulous tutorial on shooting in RAW and using Photomatix to make an HDR image.

Buying Gear Online

Consumer Warning: Buyer Beware! by *trevg
An article outlining how to safely buy camera gear (and anything really) online; tips to avoid scams; and a list of sites to avoid.

B&H
The most widely known online camera and video store. A safe, reputable place to buy gear with prices that can't be beat along with super fast shipping. They also have a physical store in New York City.

Free Software Alternatives and Legal Downloads

Microsoft RAW viewer - this download enables you to view thumbnails and previews of RAW images (from both Nikon and Canon) instead of just seeing the "raw" file icon. I have found this to be a great time saver since I can actually see which photos are which and not waste time opening up duds in photoshop. If you shoot in RAW this is a must have add-on, plus it's from Microsoft directly so you know you can trust it.

Photoshop Express
This is a web based application developed by Adobe for people who can't afford or do not need photoshop elements or one of the suites.

the GIMP
Free alternative to Photoshop. It does most of the same things PS can do, and has been around long enough to generate a rather large community who have created many tutorials and resources for it.
